During the last few years, the name of Perperikon, situated in the Balkan Peninsula in the southern part of Bulgaria at some 20 km to the northeast of the town of Kardzhali, in the wilderness of the Eastern Rodop Mountains made quite a stir. In the year 2000 AD, this has been still a small rocky summit, densely overgrown with thorny shrubs and blackberries. Here and there one could see masonry walls and deeply hewn crevices in the living rock left by ancient cultures, long ago extinct.

Once, archaeological excavations were carried out on this hill, but the pits were long ago abandoned and overgrown with weeds. A few years ago even the people from the nearby villages have forgotten the path leading uphill.

Under such conditions, in the sultry August of 2000, a small group of students started to clear out the wild growth there. The time available to them was limited, the money – next to nothing and this made their professor to work on equal terms with them. The heat was indeed scorching and the temperature had never fallen below 39–40° C. However, everything was forgotten when before the eyes of the explorers the outlines of rooms, corridors, huge halls began to take shape. We had got into a grandiose ancient palace, perfectly preserved because its entire lower floors were hewn in the living rock.

The news spread in the media with a lightning speed. They immediately called Perperikon "the Sacred City of Thracians"...

Perperikon: A Civilization of the Rock People by Nikolay Ovcharov is a monumental study dedicated to one of the most mysterious and majestic archaeological discoveries in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The book explores the history, culture, and spiritual world of the ancient inhabitants of the rock city of Perperikon, revealed through years of excavations led by the author himself.

With a captivating narrative and over 260 full-color illustrations, the book immerses the reader in a world where stone architecture, ritual sanctuaries, and monumental halls testify to a highly developed civilization that thrived millennia ago. Ovcharov traces the transformation of Perperikon from an inaccessible rocky peak, overgrown with thorns, to the Sacred City of the Thracians, now recognized by scholars and the public alike.

The author presents the archaeological findings not merely as data, but as living evidence of the spiritual and social life of ancient peoples. The book delves into cult practices, burial rituals, epigraphic inscriptions, and architectural elements that reveal the complex structure and significance of Perperikon within the broader context of Balkan history.

Nikolay Ovcharov, Doctor of Historical Sciences and a renowned expert in ancient art and archaeology, shares his personal journey of discovery, including the challenges, enthusiasm, and scholarly passion that accompany every expedition. The book is not only a scientific work but also an emotional journey into the roots of European civilization, told with reverence and admiration for the Rock People of Perperikon.
