Called The Black Pope, many of his followers, Anton LaVey began the road to High Priesthood of the Church of Satan when he was only 16 years old and an organ player in a carnival.

"On Saturday night I would see men lusting after halfnaked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing the organ for tent-show evangelists, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday night they'd be back at the carnival or some other place of indulgence. I knew then that the Christian Church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man's carnal nature will out!" – Anton LaVey

From that time early in his life his path was clear. Finally, on the last night of April 1966 – Walpurgisnacht, the most important festival of witchcraft, LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of ancient executioners and announced the formation of the Church of Satan.

He had seen the need for a church that would recapture man's body and his carnal desires as objects of celebration. "Since worship of fleshly things produces pleasure," he said, "there would then be a temple of glorious indulgence..."

First published in 1969, “The Satanic Bible” by Anton LaVey became the foundational text of the Church of Satan and contemporary Satanism. The book brings together essays, observations, and rituals, presenting LaVey’s philosophy of individualism, self-empowerment, and personal freedom.

Instead of promoting worship of supernatural powers, LaVey presents Satanism as a symbolic system that emphasizes egoism, materialism, and pleasure in life. He contrasts this philosophy with traditional religions, which he argues encourage submission, guilt, and denial of personal desires.

“The Satanic Bible” is structured into four books: The Book of Satan, The Book of Lucifer, The Book of Belial, and The Book of Leviathan. These sections explore themes such as human power, free will, destruction of illusions, as well as magic and rituals designed to support psychological and emotional liberation.

The book is regarded as LaVey’s manifesto and the cornerstone for understanding modern Satanism. It has sparked both admiration and criticism – for some, it is an inspiring philosophy of self-expression, while for others it remains a controversial and provocative text.

“The Satanic Bible” continues to be one of the most discussed works in the realm of alternative spiritual teachings, leaving a lasting impact on counterculture, religious philosophy, and the modern debate on freedom and morality.
